Mesmerizing Midtown

Mesmerizing Midtown Walking Tour
Your Cape Town experience cannot be complete by doing the 4-hour, Mesmerizing Midtown Walking Tour only. Once you understand the background story of the city, you want to explore more of the inner-city itself, ambling along its narrow streets and across its vast public spaces.

Starting off in the vibrant and famous Bo-Kaap area, known for its Malay cuisine and streets with colourful houses, we explore the astonishing history of this neighbourhood with time for tasting some delicacies and buying of art, gifts and spices.

We then amble through town to the City Hall and Grand Parade. If it is a weekday, we pop in at the City Hall to view the Mandela exhibition. Also depending on the day, time, and the personal interests of your group, we recommend a visit to either the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation (by far the best museum exhibit in the city), The Cape Castle (oldest colonial building in South Africa) or the District Six Museum (depicting the tragic destruction of this neighbourhood by the Apartheid government) as part of the tour. Museum entrance fees for your own account on the day.

We weave through lower District Six with its many interesting bars, eateries, shops and apartments, giving a glimpse into contemporary urban culture. Of course, we can pop into a trendy coffee shop such as Truth or enjoy a beer at one of the many trendy or historic bars. We also learn about the devastating 1960s and 70s when most of District Six was demolished by the Apartheid regime.

The Mesmerizing Midtown tour provides ample opportunity for in-depth discussion on some of the topics only briefly mentioned in the Understanding Cape Town walking tour. These include some of the most profound historic moments of the city, such as the history and legacy of slavery, the destruction of District Six by the Apartheid Government and the first speech Mandela gave as a free man from the balcony of the City Hall. As well as current-day inner-city regeneration on the edge of District Six with its contemporary apartments, street art, coffee shops, eateries, and bars.
