Fantastic Foodie City Cuisine & Culture Tour (10am-4pm)
Simply the most exciting tour through which to get to know Cape Town. We delight in the tastes and aromas of exquisite local and Pan-African cuisine, while listening to the sounds and stories of the city. We view incredible architecture, spaces, and places and feel the fresh breezes between the sea and mountain.
We drive (or walk) to whole gamut of astonishing restaurants and eateries. It is a sensory experience of aromas and flavours. But also with weaving the stories of the city and its diverse communities into the experience. It is a gastronomic feast of note, since South Africa is known for exceptional cuisine – due to the variety of freshest produce and ingredients available to chefs.
We focus on the diverse migrant culture of the city, mixing a whole range of cuisines into an informal tasting experience that dabbles into South African and African cuisine, as well as ‘skhaftin’ culture (shift lunch/street food). Not only do we taste a wide range of fantastic food, but we also learn about the history of Cape Town and the communities who introduced the cuisines to this city.
While a specific route/itinerary is outlined below, this tour can also be customized to include specific types of cuisines you want to experience, or eating at fine-dining restaurants and wineries as part of the experience.
Itinerary:
10:00: STOP 1: Seven Colours Eatery
Our tour starts of at Seven Colours Eatery at Battery Park in the V&A Waterfront. We begin with an opening story on the history of the city and the local African food we devour, before setting out on our all-day exploration. We taste amagwinya (vetkoek) with beef mince and umfino (maize pap with green leafy vegetables and drizzled with herb oil).
11:00: Drive
11:10: STOP 2: Lusitania Fisheries
As a coastal city with a strong British-colonial history, the culture of Fish & Chips is significant all over the Cape Metropole.
11:40: Drive
11:55: STOP 3: Miriam’s Kitchen
At Miriam’s Kitchen we devour the city’s most famous ‘skhaftin’: the Great Gatsby Sandwich (steak masala, egg, chips and more on a footlong bun).
12:45: Drive
12:50: STOP 4: Eastern Food Bazaar
Another South African ‘skhaftin’ – this one Indian-inspired – is the Bunny Chow. Delectable curry served in a hollowed-out half loaf of bread.
13:30: Drive
13:45: STOP 5: Faeeza’s Kitchen
At this beautiful tea garden in the Bo-Kaap, a neighbourhood famous for its colourful houses and Cape Malay cuisine, we taste delectable samoosas, dultjes and koesisters.
14:45: Drive
15:00: STOP 6: Addis in Cape
This incredible and beautifully decorated Ethiopian restaurant is our final foodie stop. On the menu is coffee, as well as kategna with ayeb begomen and zzifa (crispy Ethiopian injera with berbere and klibe). For anyone still hungry (is that possible), full njera’s with a range of toppings could also be devoured.
