The story we tell along the way is not about the places we visit per se, but about the city you see from, and experience via, these exceptional venues. It is simply the best way to get an overview of the history of Cape Town – one of the most complex and astounding cities in the world, situated amidst the most spectacular natural landscape on the planet.
The storytelling, presented by Gerald Garner, is mesmerizing, intense, engaging and thought-provoking. It unpacks the contested history of Cape Town is six separate sessions, presented at the stops along the way.
Gerald starts off with the Scramble for Africa, the 1879 Anglo-Zulu War and the imprisonment of King Cetshwayo. He then takes the audience back to pre-colonial times and unpacks how the Cape became Dutch, French, and British at different times since the mid-1600s. Next up is full British occupation during the Industrial Revolution, the war for control of gold, and the formation of the Union of South Africa by 1910.
Gerald then marches the audience through the troubled times of the 1st and 2nd World Wars and untangles how Cape Town became the Apartheid City of the 1960s, moving on to the struggle against Apartheid and the dawn of democracy. All along, he explains how world- and local politics shaped the city physically. He ends with a powerful analyses of the Cape Town of today and the future city it could become.
