The stories of Cape Town and Johannesburg – and of South Africa itself – is so astonishing, with so many unexpected plot twists, that it almost defies belief. “No movie scriptwriter could come up with this storyline,” says Gerald Garner, author of the LocalPlaces – Cape Town and LocalPlaces – Johannesburg books. Together, these two books tell the full yet concise history of South Africa through the powerful, human stories of its two major cities.

The books capture the compelling stories that Gerald and Charlie Moyo share on LocalPlaces tours and at their popular storytelling dinners, now opening them up to a much wider audience. Readers and listeners can experience these narratives in print, ebook, and audiobook formats, making South Africa’s layered history accessible in multiple ways.

The Cape Town book is already released in print and ebook format. A pre-issue ebook of Johannesburg will become available in September 2026. While the final graphically-designed Johannesburg ebook and print books should be out by end of November 2026.

Audiobook editions of both books to follow shortly thereafter.
