Little Addis
The frenetic Ethiopian Quarter is one of Johannesburg’s most vibrant and fascinating inner-city districts. It features on several of our food tours, but we can gladly build it into an itinerary for any other Joburg exploration.
Braamfontein
Known as the student village, this area has some fantastic day-time and night-live spots. Great food to be had at the Bannister Hotel and local craft beer, as well as jazz music at Jozi Gold. While super snazzy Hugh’s is great for Thursday night Jazz. Braam in also an outdoor street-art and graffiti gallery of note.
Newtown
While Newtown has had too many ups and downs to mention, there are still some top-notch institutions in the area of which the Market Theatre is foremost.
Constitution Hill
Home to the architectural marvel that is the Constitutional Court and a series of museums in erstwhile prisons.
Maboneng & Jewel City
Maboneng also has had its ups and downs. Yet, it is still famous for astonishing street art, as well as a couple of noteworthy restaurants and bars. Jewel City, next door, is a beacon for inner-city regeneration and another spot proudly boasting street art. Don’t miss the famous Collector’s Treasury antique book around the corner.
Keys Arts Mile
A stretch along Jan Smuts Avenue in Rosebank, lined with some of South Africa’s best private art galleries.
4th Avenue Parkhurst
A village ‘high street’ with fantastic restaurants, bars and shops.
Apartheid Museum
A world-class exhibit detailing the atrocious era of apartheid era and the struggle to overcome.
Liliesleaf
An astonishing museum in the farm-house that was once the secret head quarters of the ANC’s armed wing during the struggle against Apartheid.
Mandela Sanctuary
Boutique Hotel, restaurant and venue in Nelson Mandela’s erstwhile suburban home.
