Exploring Langa Township in Cape Town.

Langa Township Tour
Langa is the oldest township in Cape Town, established as a residential area for black African workers in 1927. This was 21 years before Apartheid itself, but racial segregation was already firmly underway in the then Union of South Africa. This part of Cape Town holds incredible history and vibrant culture. It is simply a place all locals and travelers should experience if they want to get a comprehensive view of historic and contemporary Cape Town.

For Langa we recommend a walking tour with ProTeamSA, founded and operated by Lizo (MC) Mgobozi. He involves a whole gamut of local guides for tours.

This tour includes visiting the Gug Sthebe Art & Craft Centre, as well as formal housing and informal shacks – to grasp the contrast between communities. Also hostels – single-sex dormitory-style buildings originally constructed for male migrant labourers, which have since become overcrowded family homes. The tour lingers at Smiley Place. where guests can participate in a traditional boiled sheep-head tasting if they so please, before visiting the Dom Pass Museum, detailing the migrant labour Apartheid permit system. Guests also visit a local orphanage. All in all a most meaningful experience that will change your perspectives.

A minimum booking of R1720 covers up to 2 guests, or R860 per person if you are 3 or more guests.

Tours start in Langa. You can easily Uber to the starting point. Alternatively, a private transfer to and from the tour can be arranged from any City Bowl hotel or accommodation for R1000 (up to 3 guests).
